What is considered the "Modern" period is much less concrete than the other periods of music. What began with the impressionist movement sparked by Debussy and painter Monet, quickly moved into the age of atonal music and the 12 tone system of Shoenberg. Other composers such as Shostakovich revolutionized the symphony and ballet. Bursting with the use of technology electronic music sprang forth along the the post tonal system where now we are living in the present of new discover for instrumentation, orchestration and the development of sound itself.
