It ain't just classical
We often think of orchestral music or music containing these classes of instruments as classical music. It actually is inaccurate to refer to all of this music as simply classical! There are several eras of time or what is called "periods" of music that are quite different than each other. Each one is marked by the way compositions were written, certain composers, and historical events. So as instructed take your time and research the main periods of music identified here. Use the links to research and listen to music form each period. Then take the quizzes posted on the links on the right.
Baroque 1600-1750
The period called "Baroque" in music history extends roughly from 1600 to 1750. Baroque music is tuneful and very organized and melodies tend to be highly decorated and elaborate. Conflict and contrast between sections in a piece and between instruments are common, and the music can be quite dramatic. (classicsforkids.com)

Classical 1750-1820
The term "classical" is often used to describe music that is not rock, pop, jazz or another style. However, there is also a Classical era in music history that includes compositions written from about 1750 to 1825. Music from this period is orderly, balanced and clear. Its form is very important as is its harmony and tonality—that is, the musical key in which a piece was written.(classicsforkids.com)

Romantic 1820-1910
Romantic music came into its own at the beginning of the 19th century. Music from this era sounds almost boundless and free from any limitations of form. Much of this music is programmatic—that is, it is meant to describe something, perhaps a scene in nature or a particular feeling.(classicsforkids.com)

Modern 1920-Present
What is considered the "Modern" period is much less concrete than the other periods of music. What began with the impressionist movement sparked by Debussy and painter Monet, quickly moved into the age of atonal music and the 12 tone system of Shoenberg. Other composers such as Shostakovich revolutionized the symphony and ballet. Bursting with the use of technology electronic music sprang forth along the the post tonal system where now we are living in the present of new discover for instrumentation, orchestration and the development of sound itself.
